Why not just use a splitter then sideload the 2 belts onto 1 belt to balance lanes?

You can use this if you just want output balancing, but if you want input balancing this does not work. Input balancing is only applicable when belts are backed up, and when belts are backed up the [virtual-signal=signal-L]eft and [virtual-signal=signal-R]ight lanes merely swap places. This is because sideloading prioritizes the lane in the back instead of using the two lanes evenly.
